What Is An Espresso Roast?

“Espresso” isn’t a type of coffee bean. It actually refers to the intensity of roast of the bean. You can use any coffee bean and make it “espresso” if you dark roast it! Most frequently, Arabica beans are best used for coffee. These quality beans come from Central and South America, Africa, and Italy.

Still, an espresso roast is just a really dark roast. The “espresso” part comes in the brewing process. Espresso is a concentrated extraction of coffee, usually 2 to 2.5 ounces created in 20 to 30 seconds. This creates a “shot” of coffee that’s good to sip on its own or as flavoring for lattes, cappuccinos, and other drinks.

Some people love an espresso roast in their regular coffee cup, even if you don’t use an espresso machine. You’re just getting a darker roast of beans, which creates a smoother and less acidic taste. Espresso also requires a finer, less coarse grind, which beans you can extract more of the coffee flavor in less time. If you like a strong coffee experience with an array of flavor overtones, the dark roast and fine grind can work wonders for your cup.
