Why Medium Roast Coffee Is America’s Choice

Medium roast or full city intensity is the most popular type of coffee roast in America. If you order “a coffee” at your local coffee shop, you’ll likely get a medium roast in your cup. But why is that? Why is medium roast so popular?

Medium roasts are a moderate shade of brown after they’ve been cooked. They’re roasted at 410-430 degrees Fahrenheit, roasting through the first series of cracks until they reach the first moment of the second crack. At this point, the oil from the coffee bean still hasn’t emerged like it does with darker roasts, but more of the acidity has burned off than in lighter roasts. This gives it a full-bodied flavor with slightly less acidity.

Medium roasts are also a popular choice because they have moderate caffeine. Light roasts have a lot of caffeine, and dark roasts have slightly less. So for those of us who want our morning jolt without overdoing it, a medium roast is the perfect wake-up-call.
